The film is made up of short scenes based on strange, even fantastical events, experienced by people I know. Some of these are verbally recounted, others reenacted. The narrative begins with an interview with a Japanese lady aged seventy who, as a child, used to spend every day watching the will'o'the wisp forming in her home village. She says the will'o'the wisp has stopped appearing in the village, and that the folklore has disappeared along with it.
During my research into supernatural phenomena, however, I discovered that most Japanese people, while neither superstitious nor religious, still have their stock of tales of this kind, stories that are often uncertain and absurd. I see these events as an “inexplicable strangeness inlaid in ordered modern life.” What interests me, beyond the actual authenticity of the facts, is that these phenomena live on in people's thoughts.
For me, paranormal phenomena are essential elements for exploring today's world. This film works towards a dialogue between the old world and the modern world by setting fantastic events against everyday realities. The two types of landscape show both the rupture of an epoch and the evolution of another one, and make this encounter the material for a new, possible story.

Le film est constitué de scènes courtes basées sur les histoires étranges, voire fantastiques, vécues par des personnes de ma connaissance. Certains faits sont racontés sous forme de témoignage, d'autres sont mis en scène. Le récit s'ouvre sur l'interview d'une dame japonaise de soixante-sept ans qui observait quotidiennement, lors de son enfance, l'apparition de feux follets dans son village natal. D'après les dires de cette dame, les feux follets ne se manifestent plus dans le village, entraînant la disparition du folklore.
Mais au cours de mes recherches sur les phénomènes surnaturels, j'ai appris que la plupart des Japonais, bien que n'étant ni superstitieux, ni religieux, ne manquaient pas d'histoires de ce type, souvent incertaines et absurdes. Je vois ces évènements comme une étrangeté inexplicable incrustée dans la vie moderne et ordonnée. Ce qui m'intéresse, au-delà de l'authenticité des faits, c'est que ces phénomènes vivent parmi les gens.
Les phénomènes paranormaux sont pour moi des éléments essentiels afin d'explorer l'état du monde actuel. Ce film tend à produire un dialogue entre le monde ancien et le monde moderne par la confrontation d'évènements fantastiques et de faits quotidiens. Les deux types de paysage montrent à la fois la rupture d'une ère et l'évolution d'une autre, et font de cette rencontre la matière même d'un nouveau récit possible.

この短編映画は、私の周りの人々が体験した不思議な現象を元に作った、複数のシーンで構成されています。インタビュー形式で語られる話もあれば、フィクション映像にした話もあります。
物語は、子供の頃、故郷の村で毎日「火の玉」の出現を目撃していたという、67歳の日本人女性へのインタビューから始まります。
この女性によると、時代が変わるにつれ、火の玉は村に現れなくなり、伝承も消えてしまったといいます。
超自然的な現象について考察する中で、現代の日本人の多くは、既に迷信深くもなければ、宗教的でもないにもかかわらず、こうした不思議な体験に事欠かないことを知りました。
そして、その出来事はしばしば曖昧で、不条理なものでありました。
これらの不思議な出来事は、現代の秩序ある生活に埋め込まれた、説明できない不可思議さです。
その出来事が本当に起こったかどうか以上に私が興味を持っているのは、これらの現象が人々の中に息づいているということです。
私にとって、超常現象は現代の世界のあり方を探る上で不可欠な要素です。
この映画を通して、幻想的な出来事と日常の出来事を対比させることで、古代と現代の世界の間に対話を生み出せるのではないかと思いました。
ある時代の断絶と、別の時代の進歩を同時に示し、新たな物語を生み出したいと思いました。
